Google released its annual list of the most searched words and terms yesterday, giving a snapshot of the stories and trends that have captured the public’s imagination.
The survey revealed that Stephen Gately, the singer with the boyband Boyzone, was amongst the “hottest topics” of the year, after millions flooded the site for news of his death in October.
The “zeitgeist” lists show the most popular keywords from billions of Google queries made by British users in the past 12 months. The company’s search engine is one of the most valuable research tools. It is able to work out trends in popular culture, news, retail and anything that the public searches for online.
